DETOXING SAFELY WITH FOOD & CHINESE HERBS: Part 2

Posted by

As a recap of last month’s article, we can safely detox the various organs without drastic purging or fasting. Last month I gave some tips on how to detox the Liver. This month will be some tips on how to detox the Large Intestine (colon).

The Large Intestine is one of the 5 hollow organs and acts as a detox station. It has the function of moving fecal matter that is made of water, bacteria and unwanted chemicals. In Chinese medicine the Large Intestine is paired with the Lung and represents the emotion of grief.

When Large Intestine Qi does not descend, we get constipated. Sometimes, if a person is not willing to let things go then they may become constipated.

Fiber is important for overall digestive health, particularly to prevent constipation. Foods such as whole grains, spinach, cauliflower, carrots, wheat bran, apples, broccoli beans, figs and pears are all good sources of fiber. An important supplement is probiotics to keep a balance of bacteria in the gut. Chinese herbs that are used to move the bowel are hemp seed(huo ma ren), Chinese rhubarb (da huang) and senna leaf (fan xie ye). Your herbalist can make up a balanced formula to help harmonize and detox the intestines.

Next month I will explain how to detox the Kidney & Urinary Bladder systems safely.
