A well functioning thyroid means you have energy through out the day, stabilization of hormones and well regulated metabolism. A blood test is only a partial answer as to whether or not your thyroid is functioning normally. Different labs use different parameters so that many people are considered “normal” even though they have symptoms. Many women experience a decreased function as they go into menopause. Women who are having difficulty getting pregnant may also have thyroid function issues.
The signs of a low functioning thyroid (hypothyroid) are tiredness even with good sleep, thinning hair and brittle nails, possible weight gain, depression or anxiety. If the thyroid is over functioning (hyperthyroid) you may experience agitation, rapid weight loss and increased sweating.
There is also an auto immune disorder called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis when the immune system’s antibodies attack the thyroid gland. Many of the symptoms are similar to hypothyroidism. In addition there can be nodules on the thyroid.
TCM can help address many of these symptoms and get to the root cause of thyroid dysfunction. Acupuncture and herbs can help to stabilize the thyroid function and enhance mood. Some herbs prescribed are considered kidney qi or yang tonics which boost up function. Other herbs are adaptogenic such as ginseng to help adrenal function especially with chronic stress.
